Model United Nations Conference

‘This type of activity is exactly what our students should be participating in: relevant, practical, purposeful, real and applied. I am sure our students gained so much from the experience.’ Bellarine Secondary College Principal Mr. Colin Sing, 2010.

'On personal note, I came away from this day feeling exhilarated, extremely proud of our students and inspired to continue promoting such events. If the opportunity is available again in 2011, Bellarine S.C. would love to hold another Model UN Conference at our school.  Thank you for providing our students with such a valuable learning experience.' Cheryl Linford – Student Development Leader, Bellarine Secondary College, 2010.

A large component of the UNAA Education Program are its Model UN Conferences (MUNCs). MUNCs simulate the work of UN bodies such as the General Assembly, attempting to mobilise international cooperation through diplomacy to resolve complex global problems. The Conferences thus serve as a forum for deepening students' knowledge and understanding of the United Nations system, humanitarian issues and explore the intricacies of multilateral diplomacy. In this way, MUNCs encourage a global outlook and interest in international affairs, and promote an awareness of the limitations that may arise in the UN system.

Conference goals and objectives

The objective of a Model UN Conference is to find the best possible solution to the problem at hand through multilateral diplomacy. A successful MUNC is achieved when delegates can reach a compromise based upon their own country's national interests, international responsibilities and humanitarian obligations. The outcome is formalised in the adoption of a sound resolution.

Aims

- Increase students' knowledge and understanding of the United Nations and its member states

- Deepen students' awareness and understanding of humanitarian and other key global issues

- Promote a global outlook, tolerance and respect for diversity and differnce of opinion

- Foster a greater interest in international affairs

- Highlight the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, negotiation, participatory democracy and empathy for conflict resolution

The UNAA runs Model UN Conferences throughout Victorian universities and secondary schools. The program can be adapted to meet the special needs or requirements of individual schools and universities. Conferences can be run as part of the school/university course curriculum, and/or cultural and other activities can also be included as part of an extended Conference program.
