United Nations Internship Programme

The United Nations provides opportunities for students enrolled in a graduate program to undertake an internship at its Headquarters in New York. The Internship Program is for the United Nations Secretariat in New York only. For more information click here. UNIFEM Australia

Unfortunately, the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) Australia is not able to fund students to undertake internships or paid employment. In some cases, UNIFEM is able to formalise internships as part of university courses, by arrangement with the relevant university. If you are interested to work with UNIFEM internationally we recommend getting in touch with UNIFEM internationally or your regional office. UNIFEM Australia's website  has details of the regional offices of UNIFEM.

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

UNEP does offer internships which are advertised on their this website. Interested and qualified applicants are encouraged to regularly visit this page for new vacancies. UNEP particularly encourages qualified women to apply to our current work opportunities. As applicants only are considered for the positions to which they apply, it is encouraged that interested and qualified candidates apply for more than one position when qualifications are in line with the requirements of the respective advertised positions.

UNESCO

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) offers a internship opportunities. Posts in the Organisation are mainly filled by people in occupations linked to the Organisation’s main activities – culture, education, science and communication. For further information on internships with UNESCO click here.

International Labour Organisation (ILO)

The International Labour Organisation is the UN specialized agency which seeks the promotion of social justice and internationally recognised human and labour rights. The ILO formulates international labour standards in the form of Conventions and Recommendations setting minimum standards of basic labour rights: freedom of association, the right to organise, collective bargaining, abolition of forced labour, equality of opportunity and treatment, and other standards regulating conditions across the entire spectrum of work related issues. World Heath Organisation (WHO)

The World Health Organization is the United Nations specialized agency for health. It was established on 7 April 1948. WHO's objective, as set out in its Constitution, is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health. As the acknowledged leader in global public health issues, WHO is committed to building future leaders in public health. WHO's Internship Programme provides a wide range of opportunities for students to gain insight into the work of WHO. Every year a limited number of places for internships are available. UN-HABITAT

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-HABITAT, is the United Nations agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. United Nations University (UNU)

The United Nations University (UNU) was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations to be an international community of scholars engaged in research, capacity building and dissemination of knowledge in furtherance of the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. The UNU is not a traditional university in the sense of having a faculty, campus or students, nor does it award degrees. Accordingly, there is only a restricted number of full-time personnel at the University Headquarters in Tokyo and at its Institutes in various parts of the world; as the University carries out its work in co-operation with other research institutions, international organisations and individual scholars and scientists throughout the world.

The Purpose of the United Nations University (UNU) Internship Programme is set forth as follows: 1. To promote interaction and dialogue between young scholars and UNU; 2. UNAIDS

As the leading advocate for worldwide action against HIV/AIDS, the global mission of UNAIDS is to lead, strengthen and support an expanded response to the epidemic that will: prevent the spread of HIV; provide care and support for those infected and affected by the disease; reduce the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV/AIDS; alleviate the socioeconomic and human impact of the epidemic. UNAIDS runs an internship programme, whose objective is to provide an opportunity for university students to acquire a working knowledge of UNAIDS and to be exposed to the work of the Programme. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), a department of the United Nations Secretariat, is mandated to promote and protect the enjoyment and full realization, by all people, of all rights established in the Charter of the United Nations and in international human rights laws and treaties. The mandate includes preventing human rights violations, securing respect for all human rights, promoting international cooperation to protect human rights, coordinating related activities throughout the United Nations, and strengthening and streamlining the United Nations system in the field of human rights. In addition to its mandated responsibilities, the Office leads efforts to integrate a human rights approach within all work carried out by United Nations agencies.
