What is a MUNC?

Model UN Conferences address some of the most pertinent issues of our time.

Imagine being on the world stage and presenting Australia’s position on achieving MDGs 3 and 5 which aim to promote gender equality and empower women. How would you answer a question from the USA? What would you say if you had the opportunity to examine the policies and practices of the Democratic Republic of Congo, or of Iran?

What if you were a representative of the Maldives addressing the issue of climate change? How would you convince other nations that they need to act now? Imagine being a country faced with an influx of climate refugees. Would you support a Resolution that viewed climate change as a human rights issue?

These are just some of the situations that participants of the Model UN Conference Program have found themselves in. MUNCs simulate a session of the UN General Assembly through a creative forum of role play and debate.  Participants step into the shoes of country ambassadors and draw on negotiation and diplomacy skills to ensure their views are heard. Throughout the conference day they have the opportunity to interact with other ambassadors during the caucus sessions, present their country’s position to the Assembly and move amendments to the Resolution and its specific recommendations.

Conference goals and objectives

The objective of a Model UN Conference is to find the best possible solution to the problem at hand through multilateral diplomacy. A successful MUNC is achieved when delegates can reach a compromise based upon their own country's national interests, international responsibilities and humanitarian obligations. The outcome is formalised in the adoption of a sound resolution.

Aims

  • Increase knowledge and understanding of the United Nations and its member states
  • Deepen awareness and understanding of humanitarian and other key global issues
  • Promote a global outlook, tolerance and respect for diversity and difference of opinion
